Image+Nation’08 Review: XXY

Argentinean film XXY breaks new ground in its depiction of intersexuality (or hermaphroditism). With little exposition, thirty-five year-old director Lucia Puenzo has deftly handled the issue in a way that seemingly abates any need for further films on the subject matter: the protagonist’s perception of the body as alien, gender confusion, the community’s side-show interest, a split on parental decisions, medical theory, and apt use of metaphor throughout. XXY is as disturbing as it is real and illuminating, and its serious consideration of a person born intersexual makes it a watershed in gender film. Read more »

Image+Nation ‘08 Film Festival Preview

Tomorrow evening, the last big film festival of the year begins. Now in its 21st year and bigger than ever, the Image+Nation Festival showcases the latest in LGBT - that’s L(esbian)G(ay)B(i)T(ransgender/sexual) film in a well-organized 10-day long event that houses screenings at the prestigious Cinema Imperial, Concordia’s De Seve Theater and the NFB on St. Denis. DVD Releases for the Week of Oct. 14, 2008

While the fourth installment of a certain multi-billion dollar franchise is likely to take top bill of the renting charts this week, the real news is in the great mix of local and international art films set to hit the shelves. There are also a few disks of French, Canadian and Quebecois cinema only available on Region 1 provincially or locally - in other words, don’t look for them on Amazon.com. Lastly, the film entitled YPF in the States is being released; while the film’s content has very little that has not been seen or heard before in Kevin Smith or Judd Apatow fare, the title itself has been of great controversy to the aurally sensitive.
