FIFEM’09 Review: Mia et le migou

The staple film at this year’s children’s film festival (playing numerous times daily from 9am to 5pm) is the animated Mia et le migou. It is directed by Jacques-Rémy Girerd and based on a series of books under the popular French label J’aime lire. The film itself is a straightforward and harmless adventure story backgrounded by a theme common in kids fare: the conflict between expanding urban construction and the environment. Those familiar with animated films could best describe the film as a toned down Princess Mononoke on a much less epic scale. Read more »

FIFEM’09 Children’s Film Festival Preview

Today, the 12th edition of FIFEM (Montreal International Children’s Films Festival) begins, sponsored by Télé-Québec, Desjardins, Cinéma Beaubien and Renaud-Bray. On the program, from February 28th until March 8th is a wide variety of films aimed at younger audiences; these include animated, and live-action feature films and shorts from here and abroad. Films start every day in the morning and usually have their last showing around 5pm so as to let families head home for supper. The fact that it’s timed with the school break is no coincidence.
