Festivalissimo’09 Preview

Celebrate Spanish and Latin-American film from various hispanic (and Portuguese!) regions around the world. This year’s edition has uber-colorful programming (don’t believe me - visit their official website) and showcases films that are enlightening, from documentaries to social commentary fictions, to entertaining, be they love stories or ultra-violent modern dramas. This festival is also less cumbersome than most, with only about 30 films or so over a two-week period. It runs from March 19th to April 9th. Read more »

Brazil Film Fest’08 Review: Bossa Nova

Fifty years ago, a new musical style emerged in Brazil; it mixed the sexy beat of samba with the smooth cool of jazz: bossa nova was born. To celebrate its golden anniversary, Bruno Barreto’s film, also named Bossa Nova and dedicated to musician Antonio (Tom) Jobim, was chosen as the opening film for the 2nd edition of Montreal’s Brazil Film Fest - a strange fact, considering the film was released in 2000. Yet, it is the best known and most mainstream of the films present, thanks to it being light romantic comedy fare, half Portuguese, half English, and not a frown to be found. Like the music it celebrates, Barreto’s film is upbeat and seems to improvise along the way, although with mixed results. Read more »

Brazil Film Festival ‘08 Preview

Celebrating its sophomore year, the Brazil Film Festival, hosted by Cinema du Parc, starts tonight, December 5th and runs through to December 11th, showcasing 8 fiction and 9 non-fiction films. Read more »
